Dear KSYM Members,
As many of you are aware, our neighborhood suffers from the continuing phenomenon of break-ins and car thefts. Many are wondering what could be done about it. There are many things the police and the city are doing to try to address this, but there's one thing that we as citizens can also do—something which is not uncommon in many cities around the world: a neighborhood watch program.
I began organizing a group before the summer, but due to the high amount of summer travel in general, I pushed it off until now, after the chagim in hopes that more people will reach out.
This program is open to men and women alike, 18 years of age and older, in good health, and with no criminal record. This program requires availability and willingness to volunteer either during daytime or nighttime hours, with advance scheduling. My hopes are that with enough participants, even one shift per month would be enough to contribute!
More about the program:
The city's Department of Security & Emergency Services is establishing neighborhood security & emergency teams throughout the city and are calling on citizens to join, volunteer, and take part in the efforts.
This Neighborhood Watch initiative is a part of the overall municipal security forces and serves to improve and strengthen the sense of personal security of our citizens.
The activities provide a security presence in our streets, public parks, and help deter and prevent criminal activities, vandalism, etc.
Volunteers would patrol their neighborhood during daytime and nighttime hours with their personal vehicles, bicycles, and on foot, and would receive means of identification to assist them in those activities: reflective vests, magnetic decals and emergency lights for vehicles, searchlights, first aid equipment, and more. The volunteer teams would be working in coordination with the city's various police and municipal security patrol cars (the municipal
security patrol, the municipal police, the municipal security center).
